Singita Private Game Reserve Kruger National Park South Africa Africa

« back to the list

Forget «Out of Africa,» its canvas tents and travelling bathtub. Situated at the edge of Kruger Park, Singita is an oasis of luxury and refinement.

The brainchild of a young South African whose family for centuries possessed a game reserve in which no one hunted anymore, he decided one day to create a contemporary hotel in the middle of nowhere. On the banks of the Sabi river, one of the rare waterways in the region that never dries up, the hotel comprises three «camps» each with its own distinct atmosphere.

Lebombo, whose fame has long been established around the world; Ebony, which stands out for its warm colours and luxurious decor: crystal chandeliers, silverware, a cosy library, adobe and ebony rooms, and ochre decors blending in harmony with the savannah. Two kilometres further off is Boulders, a camp featuring «ethnic-chic» architecture. The walls in the rooms are built of black piled stones or feature immense bay windows, while the camp's thatched roofs make it appear as if it were carved out of the ground. Black and white dominate, the black polished slate floors reflecting the sun, as for the ponds surrounding the bungalows.

At Boulders and at Ebony, the central hut measuring around 400 square metres opens up onto the banks of the river and is the heart of the hotel. With only 9 rooms per camp, visitors get the impression that they're being hosted by friends, which, coupled with the quality of the safaris, makes these hotels a must leg on any journey to South Africa.
