Mazagan Beach Resort

A new oasis of luxury in Morocco
500 Arabic-Moorish styled rooms and suites, a trendy casino, an 18 hole Gary Player design golf course… Inaugurated lavishly just a few months ago, this new resort by the king of the hotel business, Sol Kerzner, is certainly no mirage. Guided tour.

The first surprise upon arriving at the estate after an hour's travel from Casablanca, is that the Mazagan Beach Resort is… invisible! Hidden by a forest of eucalyptus trees, it finally appears almost magically, with its ochre walls and Fès green tiled roofs. Designed in 250 hectares of virgin terrain bordering along a 7 km beach, the resort doesn't run the risk of quarrelling with the neighbours. Here luxury is also a question of space, so that guests have no trouble finding their own private bit of beach to set down their towel, even when the establishment is full. Some 4000 trees on the estate, from oranges to palm trees, reinforce the harmony between the buildings and landscape; a harmony that is certainly not affected by the gurgling of the fountains resonating in each interior courtyard.

In terms of distractions, there are plenty for everyone's tastes. Firstly, the immense beach and swimming pools for water pleasures, followed by a golf course for those who can't do without, and a spa to smooth away any stress with argan oil massages, not to mention the fine and flavourful cuisine in each of the 8 restaurants, and a casino to try your luck on (415 slot machines, 50 playing tables over an area of 3000 sq. metres!). ll that before going off to dance at the Sanctuary, the night-club designed by Raymond Visa, creator of the Buddha Bar…

It's hard to get bored here, although one also feels the urge to explore the surrounding region, most notably the two neighbouring Portuguese cities. Perched on a cliff bordering on Morocco's longest river, the Oum Rbia, Azemmour surprises visitors with its authenticity, from its craftsmen's stalls to the communal oven, assailed by children come to bake their flat cakes or cook plates of sardines. At El Jadida - a city classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site, relics of Portugal's past presence are still visible today. Take a stroll along the battlements surrounding the medina, before descending to visit the ancient sunken cistern dating back to the 16th century, where Orson Welles shot a scene from his Othello. The coastal road descending towards Safi offers more beautiful surprises, with kilometres of ocean and salt marshes, fishing villages and deserted beaches…
